We gave a presentation at Asia Oceania Geosciences Society (AOGS) 20th Annual Meeting (AOGS2023)
2023/11/14
Six students from Arikawa laboratory participated in the international conference (AOGS) held in Singapore and presented their research results. A summary of the research will be posted on the department website.

・D1 Tomoki Shirai
This was my first time participating in an international conference face-to-face, and I was able to interact with a variety of people, making it a very fulfilling experience. At the same time, it was an important opportunity to listen to other researchers' presentations and reaffirm the direction and position of my own research. Also, my research in coastal engineering is related to meteorology, and at AOGS there were many sessions on meteorology, and I learned a lot about how to proceed with research and how to conduct analysis. In the future, I would like to focus even more on my research so that I can present more interesting research content.
・M2 Tatsuhiko Tokuda
I also participated in AOGS last year, but since the presentation was online and via video, this was my first face-to-face English oral presentation. I experienced the presenter's personality, which I couldn't get online, and I wanted to give a natural presentation like that, but it didn't go well at all. Not only did I lack preparation, but I also felt sorry for my lack of language skills during my stay in Singapore. However, even with my poor English, I was able to communicate to some extent, which led to a reduction in my aversion to English. Also, when I listened to poster presentations, I felt that unlike oral presentations, I was able to have a conversation with the person asking the questions, both physically and psychologically, which was an advantage that oral presentations lacked.
・M2 Fukuto Yoshida
This was my first presentation at an academic conference, and it was both exciting and I learned a lot from it. In particular, I was able to learn the importance of presentation preparation and presentation techniques from other people's presentations. Additionally, since it was an international conference, I was able to interact with students from overseas, which increased my motivation to study languages. I am planning to give presentations at academic conferences in English in the future, so I would like to make use of this valuable experience.

M1 Riku Takakura
Although I have previously attended conferences as an audience member, this AOGS was my first time attending a conference as a presenter. Coupled with the fact that it was my first conference presentation at an international conference, I was nervous and my English skills were lacking, which resulted in a presentation with many challenges, but I will do my best to make use of this experience in future conference presentations, etc. Masu. In addition to the presentations, I was able to listen to various posters and sessions and learn about the various research being conducted around the world, which gave me motivation to continue my research in the future. Also, I would like to work hard every day to be able to participate in such academic conferences.
・M1 Reina Naito
Although I have experience giving oral presentations at domestic academic conferences, this was my first international conference and poster presentation. Unlike oral presentations, poster presentations allow for close discussion, so I was able to talk about things that I couldn't include in my poster. However, the explanation in English was difficult and I had a hard time understanding the questions. I realized that I needed to learn not only English but also how to explain research. Also, someone saw my poster and said they would try it out, which made me want to continue my research and present my research.
・M2 Keisuke Haga
This time, I gave a presentation at the poster session. Because the sessions were long, we were able to have discussions with a wide range of people, including researchers from not only the field of coastal engineering but other fields, and it was a very meaningful and stimulating time. Among them, many people were particularly interested in ``methods that reflect buildings in tsunami calculations,'' and we received a variety of opinions. Also, during the discussion, we felt the need to consider in more detail how to handle buildings, such as 3D calculations and wall friction. I would like to utilize this valuable and meaningful experience in my future research.

We made a presentation at THE 28TH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE INTERNATIONAL UNION OF GEODESYAND GEOPHYSICS (IUGG2023)
2023/7/14
This time, at IUGG2023, 1st year doctoral student Yota Enomoto, 2nd year master's student Naoki Taniguchi, 2nd year master's student Shiho Honda, and 2nd year master's student Mei Yoshida We made an announcement. The title and summary of each presentation will be posted on the university's Department website.
[Impressions from the conference]
・M2 Honda Shiho
I participated in a session on tsunami at IUGG2023 and experienced giving an oral presentation in English at an international conference. We listened to presentations by professors and researchers from around the world and learned about the latest trends in research and presentation methods. Furthermore, I was able to learn new ways of thinking through active communication, and had a very meaningful time.
・D1 Yota Enomoto
I presented at the poster session. Many people expressed interest in the ``modeling of non-Newtonian fluids'' part of this research, and we received various opinions and suggestions. We would like to use these as motivation for future research.
・M2 Mei Yoshida
This was my first time participating in an international academic conference, and more people than I expected asked questions about green infrastructure, which made me realize once again the importance of my own research as the world strives to create a sustainable society. It was a great opportunity. I will use the knowledge and motivation gained from this valuable experience to work even harder.
・M2 Naoki Taniguchi
At my first international conference, I learned the difficulty of accurately communicating my research in English, and the joy I felt when people understood me, which was a valuable experience for me. Being in a space where there were no Japanese people around me was more beneficial to me than any other English class, and I was able to spend a very meaningful time there.
